Tibet Guge 01 To 16 Sutlej Canyon As we got closer to Tholing, a broad view opened across the Sutlej canyon, a wild jumble of eroded sandstone hills, with the mountains of India in the distance. Kamet (7756m) is the tallest mountain, with its snowy rounded dome. This mountain has often been mistaken for Nanda Devi.

Tibet Guge 01 To 17 Sutlej Canyon Kamet Kamet (7756m) is the second highest mountain in the Garhwal region of India after Nanda Devi and the 24th highest in the world. The first ascent was made in 1931 by Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton, R.L. Holdsworth and Lewa Sherpa of a British-Nepalese expedition. It was the first mountain over 25,000 ft (7,620m) to be climbed, and for five years was the highest mountain climbed in the world until the summit of Nanda Devi (7816 m) was reached by a British-American expedition in 1936.

Tibet Guge 01 To 19 Sutlej Canyon Exit We enter narrow deep gullies; corridors in fantastic castles; from time to time, wide spaces on which stand vertically towers and peaks – contorted, ponderous – or there rise solitary monolithic columns with enormous capitals. - Giuseppi Tucci: Secrets of Tibet (September 18, 1933)
